How Wine Cellar Cooling Load (BTU) is Calculated

A wine cellar cooling unit is not a standard air conditioner. Standard air conditioning cycles rapidly to remove moisture and achieve 72°F. A dedicated wine cellar refrigeration system operates with higher-temperature evaporator coils to maintain 55°F to 58°F while retaining 55% to 70% relative humidity.

1. The Glass Exposure Penalty

Glass has virtually no R-value (single pane is ~R-1, double pane is ~R-3). Warm room air radiates heat directly through glass, requiring up to 100% to 150% more cooling capacity compared to insulated drywall.

2. The 6-Mil Vapor Barrier Rule

Without a continuous 6-mil poly vapor barrier on the warm exterior side, moisture migrates into the cellar, forcing the cooling coil to freeze into a block of ice and burning out the compressor.

3. Split vs. Self-Contained

Self-contained units exhaust heat and sound into an adjacent room. Split systems route refrigerant copper lines to an outdoor condensing unit, ensuring whisper-quiet operation inside luxury living spaces.
