Your cooling system can only work as well as your cellar's insulation allows. Inadequate insulation forces the unit to run constantly, driving up energy costs and causing premature failure. The minimum recommended R-value for wine cellar walls is R-19; for ceilings, R-30 or higher. Every wall, floor, and ceiling must be insulated, and all penetrations (pipes, wires, light fixtures) must be sealed. A vapor barrier on the warm side of the insulation is critical in humid climates to prevent condensation inside the walls. Door seals should be inspected before installation — a leaky door can defeat even a properly sized cooling system. At VA Wine Cooling, our pre-installation assessment includes a full insulation and vapor barrier review.
